A report published this week by British telecommunications analyst Juniper Research Limited estimates that wagers made using a mobile device will top $48 billion a year by 2015.
Juniper’s Mobile Gambling Markets report has revealed that Japan Racing Association's iPAT service is currently responsible for the majority of the world’s mobile gambling transactions while services in the UK account for much of the remainder.
However, the Basingstoke-based firm predicts that the mobile lottery service recently launched by VODone will propel China into third place in terms of transactions soon. The United States is about to see the introduction of its first mobile lottery services with Juniper calculating that this market may begin to take off in the medium-term helped by impending legislative changes.
Juniper’s report also noted that most service providers are opting for browser-based approaches although Apple is allowing gambling applications to be sold via its Applications Store.
