In the United States, a Senate committee has approved President Barack Obama’s choice of Eric Holder to serve as the nation’s Attorney General leading the Department of Justice.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted overwhelmingly to confirm Holder, who served as Deputy Attorney General under President Bill Clinton, and the nomination will now be put before a full Senate vote later this week. Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, stated that his panel's strong approval was a sign that Holder would be easily confirmed.

'Eric Holder is a good man,” said Leahy.

“He's a decent man. He's a public servant committed to the rule of law and he will be a good Attorney General.'

If approved by the Senate, Holder would be put in charge of whether or not to prosecute online gambling operators under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

Obama announced last week that David Ogden, who previously ran the Department of Justice’s civil division, would be his choice to serve as Deputy Attorney General. Ogden also held several other top advisory posts at the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense under President Bill Clinton and, if confirmed, would be second in command under Holder.
