    News | Obama Assumes Presidency

Forty-seven-year-old Illinois Senator Barack Obama was officially sworn in as the 44th President of the United States yesterday afternoon in Washington, DC, in front of a crowd estimated at over one million.

The Democrat is known to be a fan of poker and is an ally of anti-UIGEA campaigner Congressman Barney Frank. He trounced Republican opponent John McCain in the nation’s November elections to become the first African-American ever to be elected to the nation’s highest office.

“I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors,” Obama stated in his speech.

“The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act. Not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. All this we will do.”

Last month, Obama announced that 57-year-old Eric Holder would be his choice to serve as US Attorney General should he be confirmed by the Senate. The New York native previously served as Deputy Attorney General for four years under President Bill Clinton and has already vowed to run a Justice Department free from political meddling while making fighting financial crimes a top priority.
